Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many in-person food drives and local outreach events have been cancelled. I am hosting a virtual food drive to do my part in ensuring that the families of Long Island have improved food security and hygiene products through these difficult times.

Founded by the late Harry Chapin, Long Island Cares brings together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry on Long Island and provides for the humanitarian needs of the community. Long Island Cares goal is to improve food security for families, sponsor programs that help families achieve self-sufficiency, and educate the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. The vision is for “A Hunger Free Long Island”.
Long Island Cares supports nearly 600 food pantries, soup kitchens, and emergency shelters, some of which need the support of regular volunteers.
I have been volunteering with Long Island Cares since August 2018. I volunteer just a few hours of my time on the weekend to do local food drives in Nassau and Suffolk county. Sometimes I even take a day off work to help out at the warehouse in Hauppauge. The few hours I give to help with collecting, sorting and packing food helps to make a difference in the lives of thousands of Long Islanders who are experiencing hunger, poverty or food insecurity.1
