This book was published in 1982 by best selling author, Shad Helmstetter, PhD, who also wrote Who Are You Really and What Do You Want, and various other life-changing books. And I really do mean life-changing!! When I initially read What to Say When You Talk to Yourself, it came as a recommendation from the company I started working for just a month ago. They were like, “Brittany this book will change your perspective on so many things! Trust us. You WILL love it!” So I took their word for it and ordered the book on Amazon. However, it was taking forever to get to my house (like a whole week). I ended up going to my trainer, Stephanie, because I was really looking forward to reading it since there was so much hype about it from others in the office but it hadn’t arrived yet. Luckily, she had it on her tablet and I was able to read it on the bus ride on our way to an appointment. This book was SOOOO GOOD! I didn’t want to even give my trainer back her tablet. I literally read the first three chapters in like 15 minutes. It was awesome!
When we got back to the office, I was talking to one of our Regional Vice President’s in the office, this amazing woman, Colby, about how excited and positive I felt after reading the first few chapters and that I was looking forward to reading more of it. She informed me that there was a free PDF online and I immediately grabbed my phone, downloaded the PDF, and assigned myself to read at least a chapter a day (side note: the book has 23 chapters and I finished it in 15 days).
I give this book a 5-star rating. It is definitely at the top of my recommendation list. The reason for that is because What to Say When You Talk to Yourself, talks about the negative programming that prevents individuals from reaching their full potential and accomplishing their goals. Helmsletter tells readers that any amount of inspirational reading or motivational speeches is only temporary and that those methods will only provide us with techniques that could work, IF actually put into practice. What to Say When You Talk to Yourself really does a great job at explaining the principles of self-talk in a unique way that reverses negativity, optimizes outlook, focuses on plans/goals and show the achievements of success. The key factor of this book that stood out with me was in using affirmative language and telling ourselves the right things in order to reflect and receive a more positive lifestyle.

I wrote this book review because after reading the book, my perspective has changed on the things I say and think to myself and about others. As leaders, we should want to be the best form of ourselves. But how do we get there and maintain that positivity? My suggestion varies from person to person but I would suggest the following: reading motivational books, changing your habits for efficiency and productivity, and striving to develop yourself and others to be good leaders.
